Power Steering Made Easy
In most instances, the pumps provided with the rack and pinion are well matched and provide normal assist and
driving stability. The Flaming River pump, which is 9.6 cc, will provide about 2.0 gpm at 1,500 rpm. The max.
efficiency is reached at or about 1,350 rpm with an operating temp of 180°.
Street-driven cars have to consider ease of parking and highway stability. Pump speed at lower rpm should also
be considered. Pulley size is normally 1:1 based on crankshaft pulley diameter. Generally, a heavy car with wider
tires will require more assist, and lighter cars with narrower tires will require better road stability. The Flaming
River pump provides a factory valve which will deliver approx. 2.0 gpm at approx. 1,500 rpm/pressure 145 psi.
For customers who want to tune or adjust the power steering system to maximize assist and road or track
handling, we suggest our New High Rev Pump from KRC. This pump offers 9 different flow control valves. The
valves are similar to jets in a carburetor. The I.D. B-E will improve assist, while the I.D. 4-7 will improve road
handling. The lower the number, the greater the feel, but less assist. The higher the letter, the more assist, but
less feel.
Keep in mind that adjusting your steering assist or stability is about finding the correct balance for your driving
comfort.
