October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
26 FALL 2018 | WWW.SHAKER.LIFE
October is Domestic Violence Awareness
Month and to heighten public awareness,
the Library offers resources and reading
material to shed more light on an issue that
has claimed many lives.
To further highlight this issue, the
Library and the Imagine-Danielle Boone
Institute Against Domestic Violence, Inc.
will present ‘him’: A One-Person Play about
Domestic Violence at 2 pm Sunday, October
7 at Main Library.
The play, by Robin Hawkins, is based on
the life of Danielle Boone, a young Shaker
Heights mother with a three-week-old baby
who was killed by her partner. Danielle’s
aunt and local actor Monica Boone will
perform the one-act play and moderate a
question-and-answer session. The Imagine Institute works to teach young women about
domestic violence and to help them imagine and pursue healthy relationships.

l October 1 to November 19: Altered
Realities by Sheila N. Markowitz
l 7 pm Thursday, October 11: Meet
the Artist Reception:
Sheila N. Markowitz
began working
in the visual
arts in the
early 1970s
when she
discovered
the joys
of creating
with clay and
abandoned a
15-year career in
public relations to become a potter. Within
a year, she had set up a studio, sold work,
and won her first award in a juried show.
For 16 years, she made one-of-a-kind
clay art and taught adults and children.
In the mid-1980s, she started using a
computer and a succession of graphics
programs to merge images in myriad and
subtle ways. Her Imagiscapes became
a powerful metaphor for how the mind
overlays experiences, how it blurs and
blends them in memory, and how it
reconciles disparities to create coherence.
Her digital work has won seven awards
and is held in private, corporate, and
public collections.
