PIVOT.
Before 2020 and its challenges entered, hearing
that word made me think of the funny scene
from “Friends,” when Ross continuously yelled
the word as he and his friends tried desperately
to carry a sofa through a tight, New York
apartment stairwell. I had no issues with the
word, and maybe even liked it due to its
association with one of my favorite TV shows.
Like many things, though, 2020 pretty
much ruined the word for me. How many times
did we hear, “We’re learning to pivot,” or “Now
is the time to pivot,” or “You have to pivot?”
Pivot, pivot, pivot. I’d like to pivot away from the
word, and from some of 2020, but the truth is
that both are going to stay with us for many
years to come.
The small businesses in our community had
to learn to pivot throughout 2020, including
your own favorite community magazine. Just
days before we planned to host 1,500 of our
friends at the 2020 Best of Cobb Celebration, we
had to cancel the event. The issue still went out
to our readers as planned, but the in-person
event brings so much excitement to the awards,
to both us as well as the winners. We tried
throughout the year to reschedule the celebration
but, as we all know, this two-week pandemic
loomed much longer than anyone expected.
Still, we pushed forward with our Best of
contest and we were thrilled that our readers
came through to continue to support our
winners through nominating, voting and
sharing. Although plans for a 2021 Best Of
Cobb celebration is still being discussed, we
hope that you will enjoy reading about your
winners and congratulate them in your own
way. Buy dinner from their restaurants, call
them for your house projects, or just simply say,
“Congratulations. I’m so happy that you have
made it through and are celebrated.”
Just don’t ask them how they’ve learned to
pivot.
