THE ASCENSION
Sufjan Stevens
September 25
Indie folk singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens
is releasing a new album, “The Ascension.”
While its first single, “America” may seem
written for these times, it was actually written
six years ago. “I was dumbfounded by the
song when I first wrote it,” Stevens said in a
press release, “because it felt vaguely meanspirited
and miles away from everything else
on ‘Carrie & Lowell.’ So I shelved it. But when
I dug up the demo a few years later I was
shocked by its prescience. I could no longer
dismiss it as angry and glib. The song was
clearly articulating something prophetic and
true, even if I hadn’t been able to identify it
at the time. That’s when I saw a clear path
toward what I had to do next.”

Netflix
Millie Bobby Brown of “Stranger Things”
fame plays a plucky 19th-century super sleuth
who breaks the fourth wall and shows off
her martial arts moves in Netflix’s coming
movie “Enola Holmes.” Based on Nancy
Springer’s book series, “Enola” stars Brown
as Sherlock Holmes’ rebellious and modern
teen sister. The Victorian-era adventure sees
Enola fight for “her freedom to be a woman in
her own right,” says director Harry Bradbeer
(“Fleabag,” “Killing Eve”). The film also
features the iconic Sherlock (Henry Cavill),
whose character arc leans more emotional
than crime-solving as the detective is forced
to get to know his younger sibling and “learn
to care for someone for the first time.”
