We had our ceremony in the chapel at Marietta First Baptist
Church, the church I grew up going to. I loved the thought that
my maternal grandparents, who passed away before I was born,
had once sat in those pews. Dr. Ross encouraged us to really take
in the setting, and it truly was surreal to have all of our friends
and family in one place, for one purpose.
After the ceremony, our guests went to my parents’ home,
historically named Oakmont, for some much-needed
refreshments since it was about 90 degrees outside! Kandon and I
had some time to just be together and get in some final portrait
photos. I’ve never felt so full of joy than I did right after that
ceremony, to finally be man and wife, and knowing that it was
time to celebrate with our guests! We did also take some time to
dig up a bottle of bourbon that we planted in the yard a month
before with my sister and maid of honor, Kylie, and best man,
Connor. According to the tradition, if you bury a bottle of
bourbon upside down in the site where you’re getting married, it’ll
hold off the rain.
The setting was more magical than I could have possibly
imagined. Every beautiful detail felt like us and it was a physical
reflection of the intentional, loving effort our families had put in
to make our day so special. We got to hear more sweet words from
friends and family and share our first dances. My dance with my
dad ended with a surprise “Dance of Gelderland” from our
favorite movie, “A Knight’s Tale,” and Kandon and our whole
bridal party joined in with a choreographed dance! If you want to
see if your friends really love you, ask them to learn a
choreographed dance and perform it in front of 100+ people.
Shortly after the band starting playing, the rain began...
apparently, our bourbon trick didn’t work! It ended up absolutely
pouring for the next two hours. Our friends and family got water
off the roof of the tent, mopped up the dance floor with towels,
and they kept the party going despite everything. The rain did
cause some adjustments to have to be made to the schedule, and
by 11 p.m., when we were supposed to leave, we decided we
weren’t ready! We ended up staying in my parents’ gazebo with
many of our close friends and family, getting in even more quality
time before eventually ending the night. Everything didn’t go
exactly to plan, but we wouldn’t change a thing! We will never
forget the joy, gratitude, and love we felt that night.
