Serve him in truth with all
your heart
( I Samuel 12:24).
on the physical appearance of Eliab, not his
spiritual appearance. But the LORD said
unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance,
or on the height of his stature; because I
have refused him: for the LORD seeth not
as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward
appearance, but the LORD looketh
on the heart (I Samuel 16:7).
Seven of Jesse’s sons passed before Samuel,
but the Lord had not chosen any of them. God
was looking for someone who had a heart set
on Him, someone He could trust to obey His
commandments and who matched the reflection
of His image.
Finally, David was brought before Samuel,
and God let Samuel know that he was the one.
The Lord had Samuel go through the process
of meeting each one of Jesse’s sons to teach
him and us a great lesson—that God doesn’t
look on the outer appearance; He looks on the
inner appearance.
Do You Show Love?
Again I ask you, what reflection do you see
in God’s mirror? Maybe you are not sure, or
maybe you think you are all right with God
and look pretty good; but the only way you
will know for sure is to compare your life
with the Word of God. Put on therefore, as

great value to Him. For they that are after
the flesh do mind the things of the flesh;
but they that are after the Spirit the things
of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded
is death; but to be spiritually minded is
life and peace. Because the carnal mind is
enmity against God: for it is not subject to
the law of God, neither indeed can be. So
then they that are in the flesh cannot please
God (Romans 8:5–8). The only way you can
please God is to be concerned about spiritual
things. We need to have a heart that is set on
God.
David is a prime example of someone who
had his heart set on God. Before becoming
king, David was a lowly shepherd taking care
of his father’s sheep; and he had great love
for the Lord. When King Saul failed God, the
Lord sent the prophet Samuel to the house
of Jesse to anoint one of his sons as the next
king. When Samuel arrived, he had Jesse
bring his sons before him.
When Samuel saw Eliab, Jesse’s oldest son,
he immediately thought that he must be the
chosen one; but Samuel’s thought was based
