Here we are already. I do not know about you, but every year, it seems as
though the pages on the calendar go by faster and faster. So, I would like to
look back in retrospect on the past year and take a glimpse of what is coming
for 2020 for our City.
The RB&W Riverfront continues to be utilized for more and more events.
Food Truck Fridays, Art in the Park, Chamber Summer Splash, Power Boat
races, Ski Team performances, Bag’s for Vet’s, Taste of Fiesta and of course
we just concluded our Big Cat fishing derby. All of these events create activities
for those of us here in the Community to participate in, and just importantly,
they bring people into the area as part of day trips to join in the various
celebrations and contribute to our local economy by doing so. Tourism is an
economic development tool, as is apparent with the increase in the amount of
hotel/motel taxes that the city receives each year.
In the Riverfront area south of the Holiday inn Express & suites, we have
seen new developments taking place and others have been finalized and will
be coming in 2020. The old City of Rock Falls Electric Utility Building, also
known as the Rock River Tool & Die, is undergoing a metamorphosis. Owner,
Larry McCormick is making an investment in the property, converting
the buildings into a new Banquet Facility that will accommodate between
400-450 people. In addition, in the west end of his building, a new restaurant
will be entering the business community. (Details on that new business will
be coming soon).
We will also be welcoming another hotel to the Riverfront, directly across
the street from the current Holiday Inn Express & Suites. The new facility
will bring another 46 units, and is a new franchise called “My Place” and
construction is scheduled for next spring.
In 2020 the City will be doing a complete re-build of third avenue from W.
2nd Street to First Avenue. The road will be widened, new curb & gutter and
sidewalks. In 2021, we will see a rebuild of Dixon Avenue, from First Avenue
to the bridge over the canal, this will be an FAU funded road project.
Lastly, a reminder to everyone about our yearly fall ritual of cleaning up the
leaves that blanket our yards. The leaves should be put into yard waste containers
or bags and put out for your regularly scheduled garbage pickup. Do
not rake them out into the streets or get caught pushing them down into
stormwater catch basins. They are picked up for free. Most importantly, Yard
Waste of any kind, is only picked up through the last garbage pickup in November,
regardless.
