What Is Intermittent Fasting?
Many people observe intermittent fasting, intentionally or unintentionally.
This fitness trend consists of cyclical fasting and eating phases. Individuals
often implement this convenient lifestyle in order to lose weight or to improve
health. Find out what this regimen entails and how you can get started.
Food Choices
Since intermittent fasting doesn't restrict foods, it's not a diet. However, this
doesn't mean that food choices aren't important. Nutritious foods make the
best options, and you can implement diet-specific selections. You can also
continue to take any vitamins and natural supplements.
The 16/8 Method
Also known as the Leangains protocol, the 16/8 method seems the most
common style of this routine and involves eating during an 8-hour time
frame while eliminating foods for 16 hours. For example, eat first at noon
and consume the last meal at 8 p.m. Of course you can adjust the times to fit
individual work schedules.
Even those who seem unaware of this plan sometimes participate because of
their sleep schedules. This scenario especially applies when you don't eat right
away after getting up or when you stop eating a few hours before bedtime.
People who tend to sleep longer can easily implement this regime. Regardless
of individual behavior patterns, not eating for at least 16 hours qualifies as
intermittent fasting.
Other Options
Another popular intermittent fasting style involves limiting calories twice
a week while eating regularly on the other five days. Men can consume 600
calories while women limit themselves to 500 during the restricted days. The
warrior diet also uses an intermittent fasting concept because it allows only
fruit and raw vegetables during daylight hours. At the end of the day, you can
have a large meal.
Hunger
As with any strategy that involves restricting food intake, one common question
arises: Doesn't this plan create hunger? The good news is that you can
drink unsweetened coffee, tea or water at any time. Doing so can help with
feelings of hunger during the fasting periods. It also helps to ease into this
program.
While any changes in eating patterns can create feelings of hunger at first,
they disappear once you're used to the new habits. Many people even report
that they feel better and have more stamina. Intermittent fasting also works
well with busy lifestyles.
For thousands of years, humans have fasted when food wasn't available.
Healthy human bodies easily adjust to time spans without food. Fasting also
makes up a part of many major religions. All of these factors show that going
without food occasionally is not unusual. Just remember to consult a healthcare
professional before making drastic changes to a diet.
