An American icon,
the Airstream was
created by Wally Byam
in the 1930s using
lightweight design
techniques from the
aircraft industry.
On a drizzly Spring aternoon, a
group of travelers gathered at
over a pint.
Among the group was a pilot, a teacher, an
accountant, a personal concierge, husband and
wife engineers, a retired military colonel, an oil
executive, a carpenter and a retired Coca-Cola
VP.
e diverse group came from all over the
Southeast, from Clayton to Valdosta and up
from Amelia Island.
In fact, they only had one thing in common
– they all own an Airstream, the iconic silver
travel trailer with riveted sides and rounded
shell that has been a mainstay in leisure travel
since the 1930s.
Having an Airstream is the only requirement
to join their ranks. ey belong to the
Southeastern Camping Unit, one of 122 local
clubs comprising the overall Airstream Club
International.
