The love of the
It’s the love of the game that
drives many people to make their
home at Lake Oconee, and many
others to make it a prime travel
destination.
Lake Oconee is surrounded by
some of the state’s most beautiful
and challenging courses, and
is only an hour’s drive from Augusta,
the Mecca
of the golf world.
e golf undoubtedly
draws people
to our region, but
it’s a host of other
things that makes
them stay.
Our stunning
courses only complement
the surrounding
natural
environment with
its native forests
and expansive
shorelines. But
more importantly
there is an environment
of support and encouragement
throughout the community.
is sense of camaraderie can
often be seen on the course or in
the clubhouse. And more often
these days, it’s groups of women
out enjoying a round of golf
together. As we see on page 32,
the number of women hitting the
links is on the rise. Golf oers a
perfect mix of outdoor exercise
and socialization which was especially
important during a pandemic.
More and more girls are also
discovering a love of the game as
golf programs expand at schools
and universities across the country.
Several organizations on a
national and state level, like the
Women in Golf Foundation and
the Georgia Women’s Golf Association,
provide nancial support
to these programs by hosting
tournaments throughout the year.
Camaraderie is also fostered
at a new kind of men’s group
that gathers on
the course – this
time for Yoga
classes designed
to help improve
their game. Led
by certied Yoga
instructor, Valerie
Pavlo, these
classes focus on
poses that help
golfers achieve
a more eective
golf swing by enhancing
their balance,
exibility,
and strength. She
shares some of the best poses for
golfers on page 46.
And, for those who like to gather
together after a round of golf,
or for a Masters viewing party,
Chef Deborah Johnson shares
four quick and easy snacks that
everyone should master on page
58. Find variations on pimento
cheese and egg salad – quintessential
Masters favorites – along
with Southern staples like cheese
straws and “comeback crackers.”
However you like to spend
time with neighbors and friends,
Lake Oconee oers much more
than just golf. Here, it’s easy for
the love to the game to grow into
something greater.
