Fire Chief Patrick Sweeney and Mayor David Weiss presided over the swearing-in ceremony of 10 new members of the Shaker Heights Fire Department at Fire Station No. 1. The new firefighters/ paramedics are (l–r): Jeffery Heintz, Frank Gromosky, Jacob Scott, Brittany Isom, Connor Kaucic, Scott McClure, Olivia Ventura, Griffin Czarnecki, Timothy Nemes, and David Allen. The City has increased staffing at the Fire Department in response to community needs; the department calls for service have increased 30 percent over the past several years. “Increasing our crew allows us to maintain our efficiency and effectiveness in responding to emergencies,” Sweeney says. Tool Library With a small membership fee, you can borrow tools to get the job done. City Grant Programs The City funds a series of grant programs to help eligible residents maintain their homes. Grants don’t need to be paid back; programs are administered by the Home Repair Resource Center. Grants include: • Exterior Maintenance Grant: Up to $2,500 to correct exterior violations cited by the City’s Housing Inspection Department. • Senior Emergency Safety Grant: Up to $500 to address health and/or safety hazards for homeowners who are permanently disabled and or age 62 and older. • Free Paint: Free exterior paint to correct paint violations cited by the Housing Inspection Department.
