4 SUMMER 2022 | WWW.SHAKER.LIFE Shaker Online Bursting with Blooms Seasonal Flower Baskets Enhance City’s Charm The hanging of flower baskets in some of the City’s commercial districts and neighborhoods including Lomond Boulevard, Winslow Road, and Chagrin Boulevard, is a Shaker Heights warm-weather tradition. Residents can thank Assistant Director of Public Works John Becker and his crew for maintaining these colorful bursts of blooms. Typically, the City hangs more than 200 baskets during Memorial Day weekend. This year, the number of baskets was reduced to about 130 due to construction on Chagrin Boulevard. “We usually hang and maintain 227 baskets throughout the City,” says Becker, “but with a number of resurfacing projects on Chagrin Boulevard, stretching from the Cleveland border all the way to Warrensville Center Road, we are removing 96 of the baskets.” The basket arrangements – created for both sun and shade – contain a variety of begonias and petunias, and two types of vines. Once in place, Becker’s crew waters the baskets regularly throughout the season. The baskets along Lomond Boulevard and around Lomond School are the result of a longtime partnership between the City and the Lomond Neighborhood Association. “The Lomond Association is committed to funding a portion of the flower baskets,” says David Thal, a Lomond resident who helps organize the annual project. “We always look forward to this beautification project, and particularly appreciate the care and maintenance the City provides for these stunning baskets to flourish throughout the spring and summer seasons.” CERT Seeks Volunteers The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), made up of volunteers who assist the City’s Fire Department during emergencies, will conduct a 10-week training program this fall. Shaker CERT is one of the more than 1,000 CERT teams in the United States; the program is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The training program includes everything from disaster preparedness to fire safety, even light search-and-rescue. Volunteers must also maintain current CPR and first-aid certifications. The training will be Thursdays, 6:30-9:30 pm, from September 8 to November 10. Anyone interested in attending the training or learning more about the program, contact Louis Bottone at 216-491-1205 or email louis.bottone@shakeronline.com.
