Celebrate National
Library Week in April:
Connect with
Your Library
National Library Week is an annual, weeklong
celebration held in April to highlight
the valuable role libraries, librarians, and
library workers play in transforming lives
and strengthening communities.
In 1954, when research indicated that
Americans were spending less and less on
books, the American Library Association
and the American Book Publishers
formed a nonprofit organization called
the National Book Committee with the
lofty goals of “encouraging people to
read, improving incomes and health, and
developing a strong and happy family life.”
In 1957, the committee developed
a plan for a National Library Week
based on the idea that once people were
motivated to read, they would support
and use libraries. With the cooperation
of ALA and help from the Advertising
Council, the first National Library Week
was observed in 1958 with the theme
Wake Up and Read!
National Library Week has expanded
to include National Library Workers
Day (2003), National Bookmobile Day
(2010), and Take Action for Libraries Day
(2017). Celebrities joined in by serving as
honorary chairs led by actor Julie Andrews
and followed by Neil Gaiman, John
Grisham, Judy Blume, and

Misty Copeland. This year’s celebration
marks the 64th anniversary with the
theme Connect with Your Library.
You can connect with your library by
signing up for a library card. All you need
is a photo ID and proof of current address
to have access to the CLEVNET library
system, a consortium of 47 library systems
across 12 different Ohio counties with 12
million items.
If the material you want is not available
immediately, call or stop by the reference
desk at either location and ask a librarian to
place holds on the material, or use the
online catalog at shakerlibrary.org to
access the CLEVNET catalog. When
placing your hold, be sure to choose the
Shaker Main or Bertram Woods location
for pick up. You will be notified when
your material is available and you’ll have
seven days to retrieve it. If you wish to use
curbside pick-up, call the circulation desk
and choose Option 4 when you arrive at
your pick-up location.
Using your library card, you can
check out electronic books, movies,
and music on Overdrive, Hoopla, and
Kanopy. You can also gain free access to
online resources like Consumer Reports,
LinkedIn Learning, Ancestry.com, and
multiple newspapers. Get started at
shakerlibrary.org.
Another way to connect with your
Library is to join the Friends of the Shaker
Library. According to Sussex-area resident
and Friends’ member Jessica Cantrall,
“Libraries don’t succeed on their own.
They need friends, so to speak. I like that
Friends of the Shaker Library keeps this
at the forefront of people’s minds. They
remind people that we have to help the
Library so it can continue to help us.”
Formed in 1980, Friends raises
funds through its annual membership
drive, book sales, and quarterly raffles.

us.”
