City Designates Sites
for Grow Not Mow
Initiative
On Saturday, April 30, from 10 am-1 pm
(weather permitting), the public is invited
to volunteer in assisting in a Grow Not
Mow event at the corner of Courtland
and South Park boulevards. A mixture
of native trees and bushes will be added
to the site, courtesy of a grant from
the Cuyahoga County Soil and Water
District and matched by the Doan Brook
Watershed Partnership.
The City has designated two Grow
Not Mow sites with additional sites
under consideration. The second site,
at the northwest corner of South Park
Boulevard and Lee Road, will be returned
to a meadow this season; the City and its
partners are pursuing additional grants for
native plants.
Organized by the Stormwater
and Green Space Subcommittee of
the Sustainability Committee, in
collaboration with the Doan Brook
Watershed Partnership and the Nature
Center at Shaker Lakes, the Grow Not
Mow program reduces the City's costs
while creating a more diverse habitat for
native plants and animals.
“The Grow Not Mow program is
a great example of how we can create
more sustainable practices that are a
win for everyone,” says Shaker Heights
Sustainability Coordinator Michael Peters.
“The City saves money, pollinators and
native species thrive, and the health of
the Doan Brook is enhanced. Plus, it's a
really lovely place for a walk – taking a far
less-interesting, mowed field and turning
it into a meadow.” SL
