A Note from Colleen
This is the debut of a regular update
from Colleen Jackson, Chief Diversity,
Equity and Inclusion Officer.
Thank you for the warm welcome to Shaker Heights!
It’s been a pleasure to meet with so many of you and wonderful to hear
your passion around creating a more diverse, equitable and inclusive City.
I am truly excited about the work we will do together.
Each quarter, I’ll be providing residents with an update on the City’s
DEI work in this column, which we’re calling A Note from Colleen. Let’s
start with what we’ve been up to recently.
In the fall, I launched a professional training program for all City staff,
designed to help improve internal and external communications around
DEI. It’s called Language Level Set, and the goal is to ensure City employees
have a working knowledge of important DEI concepts. Topics include: What
is equity? What is unconscious bias? Intersectionality? Privilege? And lots
more. It’s been gratifying to watch our staff grow in their understanding
and use of these concepts, and to engage in meaningful conversation around
how we can better communicate with one another and better serve all
residents in our day-to-day work.
The other major initiative I’ve been working on is the formation of
City Council’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. We had a huge
response to our call for volunteers – a big thank you to the more than 90
residents who submitted an application – and I’m really excited about the
work we will be able to accomplish with the Committee. Everyone is invited
to attend and get involved with our monthly meetings. Please visit the
City’s website at shakeronline.com and look under Government for more
information. I hope to see you there.
Thank you, again, for the warm Shaker welcome. If you’d like to get
in touch, you can reach me at colleen.jackson@shakeronline.com. I look
forward to the conversation.
Sincerely, Colleen
