Shaker Author and
Local History Spotlight
Shaker Heights is home to many
talented authors. While some readers
dream of writing a book, others carve out
the time to craft their stories and publish
them—and then donate them to Shaker
Library’s Shaker Author Collection.
Recent new arrivals to the collection
include something for everyone.
The Old Men Who Row Boats and
Other Stories by David Joseph (Shaker
Heights High
School Class
of 1991) is a
collection of
short stories
that describes
extraordinary
moments in 14
ordinary lives. The
stories are set in
cities in Portugal
and Spain. The
book was donated by the author’s friend
and classmate, James Woodring.
Sanctioned by Peter Hardin-Levine
(SHHS ’77) is a fast-paced legal thriller
that provides a true-to-life look at the
headline-grabbing
issues of our
times. A graduate
of Northwestern
University and
the University
of Michigan Law
School, the father
of five worked in
the business sector
and as a practicing
attorney, but yearned to add “author” to
his resume. In his semi-retirement, he
completed his first novel and proudly
donated it to the Library.
