The Coretta Scott King Award is
another prestigious award, recognizing
outstanding
African
American
authors and
illustrators
of books
for children
and young
adults that
demonstrate
an appreciation of African American
culture and universal human values.
Thanks to a generous gift from the
Moreland On the Move Community
Association in 1995, the Library was able
to purchase all past Coretta Scott King
(CSK) Award-winning books in print at
that time and establish The Coretta Scott
King Collection. The collection’s debut
was celebrated with a special reception
featuring a performance by Karamu
House. Since then, the Library has
continued to purchase the CSK winners
each year.
The Coretta Scott King Award was
established in 1969 to recognize the
talents of African American authors
writing for children and teens, and to
honor the late Martin Luther King. Jr.
and the ongoing social justice work
of Coretta Scott King. In 1982, the
American Library Association became the
administrator of the award.
Sometimes, a book is so
extraordinary that it is honored with
multiple awards, as happened in 2018
when Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut
written by Derrick Barnes and illustrated
by Gordon C. James, was named a
Newbery, Caldecott, CSK Author, and
CSK Illustrator Honor book, and won
the Kirkus Prize for Young Readers.
Publishers Weekly’s review declared it
“a powerfully moving tribute to
barbershop culture…. Pride, confidence,
and joy radiate from the pages, both
in the black and brown faces of men,
women, boys, and girls featured in
Barnes’s majestic paintings, and in
writing that celebrates human worth with
every syllable.”
Enjoy this award-winning book and
many others at the Library.
