Shaker residents take great pride in their historic homes. This year’s Preservation
Awards program is an opportunity for residents to earn recognition for exterior projects
completed after April 2019.
The Shaker Heights Landmark Commission established the biennial Preservation
Awards program in 1998 to recognize property owners who have preserved and improved
their properties. Nominations may be submitted for any building in Shaker Heights,
including homes and apartment buildings, commercial buildings, and other structures.
Award categories include:
· Retention of Original Materials
· Exterior Restoration
· Excellence in Stewardship
· Distinguished Landscape
· Architecturally Appropriate Addition
· Other
Submissions will be accepted online through March 31. Winners will be announced
at an awards ceremony in the fall. Nominate a project or view 2020’s recipients at

2022 Preservation Month Photo Contest
The Shaker Heights Landmark Commission’s annual photo contest officially
kicks off in the spring, but entries are already being accepted for the 2022
contest. The contest was created in honor of National Preservation Month,
which is celebrated each May by preservation organizations across the country.
To enter, take a photo of what makes Shaker “Shaker” for you, and post it on
Instagram with the hashtag #PreserveSH22. Then upload the original photo to

Shaker Life Wins
Two National Awards
Shaker Life was awarded two
Savvy Awards from the City-County
Communications & Marketing
Association in recognition for
outstanding work in photography.
The ceremony was held last
September in St. Louis.
The highest award for
photography was given for a series
of photographs in the feature
“The Evolution of Residential
Architecture” from the summer
2020 issue. It highlighted a new
home designed by longtime Shaker
residents and Cleveland architects
Ron Reed and Vince Leskosky.

The Award of Excellence was
given for the cover of the Winter
2021 issue featuring artist and
Shaker resident Julius DeWitt
Hannah. The photograph is by
