went 35-25 and won the National
League East division for the third year
running, the team’s 15th NL East title.
The Braves went as far as the National
League Championship, where they
sought to win their first NL pennant
since 1999. After leading the series 3-1,
the Braves stumbled as the Los Angeles
Dodgers came back to win the series
4-3. The Dodgers went on to win the
World Series.
The 2021 season has been a tough
one as of this writing. The Braves have a
losing record. Outfielder Marcell Ozuna
was arrested in May on domestic violence
charges. In July, star player Ronald
Acuña Jr.’s season ended with a torn
ACL. The team’s other star, first baseman
Freddie Freeman, leads the team.
Pre-pandemic, the Braves’ average
attendance had been rising yearly, from
30,929 in 2017 to 32,777 in 2019, the
12th highest average in the MLB.
During the pandemic, Truist has hosted
vaccination events and served as one
of four bulk distribution facilities for the
Cobb Community Food Fleet, which
distributed food to people in need.
In May 2021, the Braves returned to
full capacity at Truist and made face
masks optional. That was the final step
of a return-to-normal phase-in — the
stadium allowed one-third and then
one-half capacity earlier in the season.
Truist Park also found itself at the center
of political controversy in 2021. Following

the passage of SB 202, a law that
overhauled Georgia’s election system,
the MLB pulled the All-Star Game from
its planned site of Truist Park. The game
was held in Denver instead. Democrats
— and the MLB — alleged the bill would
make voting more difficult, particularly
for voters of color. Meanwhile, Republican
Gov. Brian Kemp, speaking for
members of his party, maintains the law
makes it “easy to vote and hard to cheat.”
The All-Star Game hullabaloo led both
parties to pin the blame on the other, so
don’t be surprised to see it mentioned in
political ads on your TV.
