No Fall Season for 2020
After undefeated spring,
Vikings look to sustain success

After the first undefeated season
in program history, Berry carries
a five conference champion streak
into the fall 2021 season. For coach
Tony Kunczewski, the focus is all
business as the Vikings have not
only conference aspirations, but
national ones as well.
“For us, there’s a high standard
here now,” Kunczewski said. “You’re
either green and growing or you’re
ripe and rotting. We never talk about
winning, but we want to take care
of business each week. Hopefully
if we do that enough, it can lead
to another conference championship.
Right now, we haven’t been
able to get past the second round
of the playoffs. We want to try to
grow and get deeper in the playoffs
and finish in the top 10 in the
country, so that’s our next immediate
goal as a program.”
After the fall 2020 season was
scratched due to COVID-19, the
Southern Athletic Association (SAA)
decided to hold a shortened, fourgame
spring season during February
and March.
Berry won all four games played,
including a 21-20 thriller over Hendrix
in the SAA Championship game
held in Little Rock, Arkansas, to
capture its fifth straight title. The
Vikings won three of their four
contests by three points or fewer.
During the spring, Berry’s offense
was led by quarterback Gavin
Gray. During his four-game sophomore
campaign, he threw for 940
yards with nine touchdowns and
four interceptions.
“This is the first time in eight
seasons we had a legitimate hey,
he’s the No. 1 quarterback where we
didn’t play multiple quarterbacks
in a game,” Kunczewski said. “He
was a clear-cut starter, but I also
think there’s a ton of talent behind
him so we feel really good at the
quarterback position.”
Gray will have plenty of tools to
work with, as Berry’s top four receivers
in terms of receptions are back.
Running back-wise, the Vikings
will turn to the sophomore duo of
Jonahan Maisonave and Seth Mc-
Clure for the majority of carries.
As freshmen, the two combined
for 331 yards on 51 rushes.
“We feel really good about the young
talent we have coming back,” Kunczewski
said. “We’re only losing one
starter on offense, so we’re excited
about the prospects for the future.”
Defensively, Berry has senior Connor
Cheyunski back. He was the leading
tackler during the spring season
with 33 tackles, including 14 solo.
Kunczewski’s coaching staff
entering the fall will look a little
different than in year’s past.
Rich Duncan, Berry’s longtime
offensive coordinator and offensive
line coach, was hired as the
new head coach at SAA-member
Rhodes College. Kunczewski said
Colin Duling, who has been on
the staff since 2017, will be the
new OC.
This year, Berry added six-time
D-III national champion Wisconsin
Whitewater to the non-conference
schedule. The Vikings will travel
to the upper midwest in Week 3.
“For our program to take the
next step, we feel like that’s one of
the things we have to do,” Kunczewski
said. “If you want to be the
best, you have to be able to compete
against the best.”
