Seniors pave way for Coosa
to have high hopes for season
By Brandon Dyer
News-Tribune Correspondent
After going 4-4 last season, Coosa
is primed for progress.
Joey Mathis, entering his second
season at the helm of the football
program, said he is optimistic for
the upcoming season.
“We lost a good senior class last
season,” Mathis said. “Some of these
new seniors are stepping up now that
have been really well for us in the offseason,
such as Deolis Milsap, Dalton
Denton, and Omarion Moore.”
Coosa will rely on the arm of returning
junior quarterback Hayden
McBurnett for the upcoming season.
“We have tons of kids that I would
consider playmakers for our team,
and a good solid team of leaders
in this senior class,” Mathis said.
In total, the Eagles will have 11
seniors on their roster when the
season starts.
Some of the returning players
that Mathis said jump off the paper
to him are junior running back/
defensive back Josh Dixon, junior
running back/defensive back DJ
Hames, and tight end/outside
linebacker Andrew Holt.
Mathis said the strength of this
year’s football team is the offensive
and defensive lines. Deolis
Milsap, a senior offensive and defensive
lineman, was an honorable
mention for the Class AA All-State
Team and first team all-region defensive
team last season.
Joining Milsap on the offensive
and defensive line will be two other
seniors, Gage Cole and Knox
Callen. Cole was on the first team
all-region team last season.
The Eagles defense will be returning
three juniors in the secondary:
Hames, Dixon, and junior safety
Harley Brock. Hames was designated
second team defensive
all-region team.
Coosa is coming off a season in
which it went 1-3 in its region games,
the only victory being a 24-21 triumph
over Dade County in the season
finale. In region competition,
the Eagles were outscored 102-43.
In non-region games, the Eagles
averaged 28 points per game,
with their only loss coming against
Pickens County.
“The thing that excites me the
most about this team right now is
the chemistry,” Mathis said. “We
had a really good offseason this year
and they have really bonded as a
team, and that started in January
in the weight room. We also have
a great staff in there working with
these kids too. We are building on
the foundation that we established
last year and hopefully that can
translate into success this year.”
The staff will look familiar to last
season, as Mathis will return both
offensive coordinator Jeff Shiflett
and defensive coordinator Brandon
Harmon.
The Eagles will open the 2021
season in a road game against the
Trion Bulldogs on Friday, Aug. 27.
Coosa hosts its home opener the
following week against the Armuchee
Indians.
“Come and support these kids,”
Mathis said. “They have been extremely
committed to the process
that we are trying to do and put a
product on the field that they can
be proud of. These kids get excited
about playing the game of football
and it makes them even more excited
when they see the community
in the stands.”
