Young Talent at Rome will be
tested throughout fall 2021
By Michael Baron

It’s a new year, but the expectations
at Rome remain the same.
The Wolves enter their second season
in Class AAAAAA with sights
set high, but know that late-November
football is a long way off.
“We just want to be good on every
down and take it down by down and
don’t get caught up in these massive
goals that are in December,” coach
John Reid said. “The way we sustain
success is to really put a lot of emphasis
on the daily procedure and segments.”
Rome will start underclassmen
on both sides of the ball, but unlike
the pandemic season last year, Reid
said the combination of playing
experience last fall and a normal
spring/summer schedule will help.
“We’ve gotten to do things at
university and we’ve gotten to do
things with 7-on-7s and so forth,”
Reid said. “I think those things are
still out there to be determined how
we’re gelling, but it is that time.”
The schedule has three early challenges,
including the Aug. 20 opener
against Class AAA power Rockmart,
along with Class AAAAAAA Cherokee
and Collins Hill, which Rome
went 1-2 against last season. It will
host both Cherokee and Collins Hill
on back-to-back Fridays in early
September.
“Those teams are all potential
state champions and are all going to
be in the top 10,” Reid said. “Everything
we saw last year will probably
be ramped up even more this year.”
Region 5AAAAAA promises to
be another contentious battle for
supremacy as Carrollton and Rome
are set to renew bragging rights on
Sept. 24 in the Seven Hills.
Last year, the Wolves chose quarterback
Reece Fountain after starter
Caleb Ellard went down with an
injury at Carrollton. Fountain did
not throw a single interception,
helping to guide the offense into
the quarterfinals last fall.
“I think he bought into what the
offense was and I think we tried to
manage that for him,” Reid said.
“It’s not easy to get in there on
Friday night and all of a sudden
be the man. Once he got comfortable
with that, I thought we only
got better as the season went on.”
Fountain entered the summer
with the most experience.
“We tell our kids all the time ‘these
positions are up for grabs every day,’
but Reece is an outstanding quarterback,”
Reid said. “He certainly
took the reins and, under a tough
situation last year, got the chance
to do the job and got some experience
under him. He’s been great for
us all summer and we’re expecting
big things out of him.”
Fountain will have plenty of
weapons, as nearly the entire receiving
core returns. He will have
fellow classmate Shaun Nelson and
senior Bryson Hill as the primary
options in the run game.
Defensively, the Wolves expect
juniors Stephiylan Green and Martel
Hight, who both have college
offers from SEC schools, to step
up into even larger roles.
“We’ve got a coaching staff that
does a great job, that’s dedicated
and devoted,” Reid said. “I think
we’ve got kids that it matters to
them. I think that the work we
did last year to create a successful
season against a lot of tough odds
makes these kids excited about the
opportunities they have this year.”
