or sunflower butter
and-jelly sandwich.
Each of those entrees is
paired with several sides of
fruits or vegetables, and
every day, there are fresh
side choices like sliced
oranges, fresh side salads,
grapes, and baby carrots.
Breakfast menus are
stacked with healthy
choices, too, and at both
meals, there’s a choice of
low-fat milks and 100%
fruit juices.
CCSD cafeterias do still
serve kid favorites like
pizza and chicken nuggets,
but at the highest quality
levels, using the same name
brands families enjoy at
home.
The MealViewer To Go
app and website offer
students and parents a
closer look at school cafeteria
menus. The system
features photos and nutritional
information and
allergen information for
every entrée and side item
on the menu. Traditional
full-month “at a glance”
menus for all schools
remain available online at
http://bit.ly/CCSDnutrition.
Videos on CCSD’s
website and YouTube
channel highlight the
School Nutrition program
including “Welcome to
Your School Cafeteria,”
which gives students and
parents a better understanding
of how our cafeterias
work and the choices
offered; and videos about
the award-winning Farm to
School program and the
homemade recipes made
year-round in school
kitchens.
The School Nutrition
program offers a Recipe of
the Month feature on its
website and in the CCSD
Connections parent
e-newsletter to share some
of its many homemade
recipes with families.
The School Nutrition
program knows its customers’
palates and regularly
tries our new menu items
through taste-tests. Feedback
from students greatly
influences the menu, with
new entrees and sides
planned as a result of input
from focus groups of
students including the
School Board’s high school
Student Delegates.
This spring, the program
earned top honors
from the Georgia Department
of Education. The
State’s 2020 Vision District
award recognized CCSD
School Nutrition for its
outstanding efforts to use
Georgia grown foods on
school cafeteria menus.
“Your collaborative
efforts have positively
impacted our communities
and students and those
successes are worth sharing
with your entire school
community,” Georgia DOE
School Nutrition Program
State Director Dr. Linette
Dodson said. “Congratulations
on your success and
being named a 2020 Vision
District!”
CCSD has received
numerous accolades for its
Farm to School initiative
and collaboration with
community partners
including the Cherokee
County Farm Bureau.
The School Nutrition
program for the past
decade has earned State
and USDA honors recognizing
its high standards,
and for the three consecutive
years has won the
Golden Radish Award for
its commitment to the
Farm to School movement
– at the top Platinum level
- presented by Georgia’s
Departments of Agriculture,
Public Health, Education
and Georgia Organics.
Farm to School efforts
in CCSD include using
locally and Georgia-grown
fresh ingredients (some of
which are harvested from
school gardens); and
teaching students about
where their food comes
from and making healthy
choices.
Clark Creek ES STEM Academy’s School Nutrition staff celebrate another perfect score on their health
inspection. CCSD schools average 99 across the District on kitchen inspections.
