Senior services
Cobb County Senior Services offers educational and
social programs at its seven senior centers to people
55 and older. It also provides food through Meals on
Wheels, transportation, in-home services, information
and referrals and case management.
The pandemic brought with it an increased need
for food distribution to older residents, so Cobb
Senior Services asked for donations and held multiple
contactless, drive-up events for Cobb’s residents 60 and
older to receive shelf-stable food and toiletries, according
to Kathy Lathem, strategic partnerships manager. They
also provided restaurant meals to several low-income
senior housing complexes and delivered fresh produce
boxes and groceries to homebound seniors. These
increased services will continue in 2021.
Programming went virtual for much of the year,
including exercise, cooking, crafts and informational
seminars. Since then, the centers have reopened with
limited hours and programs. Registration is required
to visit a center, and visitors have their temperatures
checked and are screened for COVID-19 symptoms.
This year, seniors can expect more programs offered
virtually and, when it’s determined to be safe, in-person.
“Cobb Senior Services is committed to providing
services and programs for older adults and their families
that allow them to make informed decisions and assist
as they age in place,” Lathem said. “We look forward to
increasing our offerings both virtually and at the senior
centers as soon as we may safely do so.”
