finished in fall 2021, but the project has been
delayed by revenue concerns due to COVID-19.
Marietta High School’s graduation rate shot up
by eight percentage points, from 75.7% in 2019
to 83.7% in 2020. School officials are hoping to
raise that number further with the addition of a
night school that opened in January. The Marietta
Evening School Hours program, or MESH, opened
with about 40-50 students at the Woods-Wilkins
campus at 353 Lemon Street. The program offers
full courses and credit recovery for students who
have dropped out due to work or family obligations,
or who have fallen behind on their classes needed
for graduation.
Enrollment at Marietta City Schools dropped less
than it did at Cobb County School District during
the pandemic, falling by 128 students, or 1.5%.
Both districts have recently made investments in
preparing students for future careers: Marietta City
Schools opened a new college and career academy
attached to Marietta High School in January
2020, and Cobb County Schools opened the Cobb
Innovation and Technology Academy in fall 2020
with the new Osborne High School.
An added challenge for both school districts is
keeping students and employees safe while also
keeping schools open for in-person instruction
for families that prefer or need it. Along with
cleaning and social distancing measures, schools
incorporated new technology to combat the virus:
Marietta City Schools installed ionization devices
to purify the air on school buses, and Cobb Schools
plans to roll out ultraviolet light devices and ozone
hand sanitizing stations at all its elementary schools.
