Finding the critters can make for a great activity on a rain-free day. Bison, llama, goats, and lots’a trout can keep the little ones interested
for an hour or so. With advanced notice, you can also make arrangements to meet working sled dogs and learn about the tasks they
can perform. Visit these locations individually, or follow the directions provided for a step by step tour that is sure to be a fun afternoon.
If you are lucky enough to be in town during the Great Bedford County Fair in July, you can also see one of the best petting zoos around.

Wilderness Adventures Kennel
With a little advanced notice, you could also become
introduced to the husky working dog and the many
tasks they perform. Whether it’s pulling a bike, cart,
four wheeler, or dogsled, these animals will amaze
you with their grace, beauty and intelligence.
Meet the dogs at Wilderness Adventures Kennel and
learn to harness and bootie a dog, and then hang
on for a ride. Call 814-735-3225 for kennel tours,
directions, and more information.
The Bison Corral
You can visit the Bison Corral Gift Shop on
Lincoln Highway (Rt. 30) just west of Schellsburg,
or just look for the bison in the field along Rt. 30. If there
are none visible, drive toward the back pasture.
To get to the back pasture from the gift shop, turn left
onto Rt. 30, drive .4 mile west and turn right onto Hoover
Rd. Follow this road about .3 mile, checking the fenced
pasture to your right. Stay out of the pasture! The bison
could hurt you if you go inside the fence.
2708 Lincoln Hwy., Schellsburg, PA 15559
814-733-2323 (see ad page 22)
Once you’ve seen the bison, continue on this road for a short distance. After the bridge, turn right onto Rose
Rd. and continue until it intersects again with Rt. 30. Turn left and drive east on Rt. 30 toward Bedford. Be
sure to check your odometer when you pass the traffic light in Schellsburg. Drive 4.6 miles to the next critter
at the Jean Bonnet Tavern on your right.

Bedford County is home to more animals than
people. Take the kids and spend the afternoon
visiting a few of them.
Along the way you will find restaurants, picnic
areas, friendly people, and of course, animals.
In addition to these places, our State Parks
and State Forests (page 13) can offer chance
encounters with critters in the wild.
Always a favorite with
the kids, the historic
Jean Bonnet Tavern on the
Lincoln Highway has a goat
paddock with several friendly
goats.
Individual bags of food are
available in the gift shop for
hand feeding.
Continue 0.5 miles east and turn left onto Rt. 56 W. Drive on Rt.
56 for 3.7 Miles. Turn left at the red light and continue on Rt. 56.
for 5.7 miles. Turn right. You’ll see a sign for the Fish Culture
Station. Drive 100 yards and turn left. Make your next right into
the parking lot and follow the parking signs.
Fishers Country Store Llamas
John Fisher keeps llamas out back, but the
store is also a treat
to behold. There’s
usually cold birch beer in the
cooler and the old fashioned
deli is kept busy by people
who come from all around to
shop here. Strong Mennonite
faith is apparent in the
operation and the charm of
this wonderful store.
When finished with your visit, turn right out of the drive and left
onto 220 S. From here it is a few miles back to Bedford or to
access Rt. 30, which will take you to Breezewood, Everett, or
Schellsburg.
This is a working fish hatchery that also
maintains a mini museum in the main building.
Outside, walk along the pools, just be careful not to fall
in! Inside, you’ll see fish, reptile and ecosystem displays
and more. There’s even a two story tank filled with some
mighty big trout.
While their main mission is to raise and stock trout, the
staff here is very friendly and if they’re free, may be able
to answer some questions for you. There are also several
picnic tables available for a relaxed picnic.
162 Fish Hatchery RD. New Paris, PA 15554
814-839-2211
After completing your tour at the Fish Hatchery, return to Rt. 56 and drive 5.6 miles back
the way you came to the “T” at the traffic light. Turn left onto Bus. Rt. 220 and drive 1 mile to
Fishers Country Store, on the right side of the road.
