Some people say mutts make the best
pets. Because their breed is a whoknows
what mixed with a maybe-this-kind,
they often have unique personalities and are
just happy to have a loving owner.
So it’s no surprise that Mostly Mutts’
tongue-in-cheek name garners much
attention – and adoptions for mutts needing
homes.
Since 2004, Kennesaw’s Mostly Mutts
Animal Rescue has been working to reduce
the number of animals euthanized at local
shelters in metro Atlanta. The nonprofit
works closely with animal control offic s to
save adoptable dogs that are often moments
away from being put to sleep. Often, these
dogs are sick and injured and require
rehabilitation. Mostly Mutts provides
housing, health care, training, and physical
and emotional care to them until they can be
placed in a new home. The group also holds
weekly adoption events at its facility in
downtown Kennesaw to help each dog fi d
his or her “fur-ever" home.
The facility is staffed by dedicated
volunteers, working four shifts a ay, seven
days a week to feed, walk and care for the
animals. In addition to its training and
adoption programs, the group also has a
“Read to Dogs” program for children on
Wednesday evenings that helps to socialize
shy dogs and helps the children with their
reading skills. The group also participates in
seasonal hikes at Kennesaw Mountain
National Park to give the dogs a fun outing
and even offers “Gentle Yoga” classes during
which yogis can interact with and love on
adoptable pups and kitties during the class.
In addition to promoting the spaying
and neutering of pets, Mostly Mutts also
makes sure its adoptables fi d the right
homes, no matter how long that might take.
That was certainly the case for Ranger, a dog
who came into Mostly Mutts’ care after it
was found living in a store parking lot in
Paulding County. Ranger was in rough
shape, but from the very beginning he
showed his loving personality, and quickly
became a volunteer favorite. When Ranger
fi ally found the right adopter after almost a
year, the group hosted a going away party for
him. Now that’s something to bark about!

about it!
House of Lu, located on the historic
Marietta Square behind the Earl and Rachel
Smith Strand Theater, is a family aff ir. If you
step into the restaurant on any given day
(well, except Tuesdays, when they’re
closed), you’ll often see owner Cindy Lu
Tam and her husband, Johnny, behind the
massive center bar in the middle of the
restaurant, pouring wine, ringing up
checks and always greeting their friends
who walk through the door. Other
members of the Lu family contribute to the
restaurant, including Cindy’s mother, also
Cindy Lu, who cooks delicious cuisine
using her own family recipes.
With almost three decades of
experience in the restaurant business, the
Lu family has crafted a menu that offers
traditional Chinese and Vietnamese dishes
as well as a carefully curated bar menu
featuring cocktails, wine and beer.
The restaurant underwent an
extensive renovation in 2014 and also has a
side room that is often used for community
gatherings and small parties.
