TIP: CHOOSING THE RIGHT STABILIZER
Stabilizer (backing) is used to beef up the fabric and provide a sturdy surface for the embroidery stitches. Here are the main types of
stabilizer and their uses:
D a v e's Ti p
CUT AWAY – This is a permanent stabilizer that will remain affixed to the fabric to provide permanent support for the design. Cut away stabilizers are best for
heavier knits, fleece, denim, and fabrics that are unstable or distort when tugged on. This stabilizer comes in multiple weights and should be matched to the
weight of the fabric. Cut away stabilizers are a popular choice, and the iron-on version is excellent for stabilizing stretchy t-shirts and knit fabrics.
TEAR AWAY – This is a temporary stabilizer that is carefully torn off after the embroidery is completed. Tear away is quick and easy to use, making it a
popular choice for many kinds of projects. This stabilizer is available in various weights and is suitable for most fabrics. It’s not the best choice for dense
embroidery designs because the needle may shred the stabilizer during stitching.
Sticky Back Stabilizers – Sticky back stabilizer is a good choice for those hard to hoop items such as socks, collar tips, and shirt cuffs, or for fabrics that
could be permanently marked by hooping, like leather and velvet. To provide additional stability with the tear away sticky stabilizer, place a piece of cut away
stabilizer beneath the hoop.
Always remember to test your choice of stabilizer before starting each project for the best results!
