A Bit of Heaven
A Joyous Night
Those shepherds
looked into the manger and
saw love in that little face like
they had never seen it before.
A bit of Heaven’s love and joy had
come down to them, and they saw
joy unspeakable and full of glory
(I Peter 1:8). A bit of divine hope and
faith had come down. Oh, how blessed
indeed! The shepherds' hearts must
have leaped within them as they looked
into the manger, and the Holy Spirit
revealed that they were seeing the
Christ child.
The shepherds were just humble
people, but they became great
witnesses; and they went everywhere
telling the story of the birth of Christ.
And they came with haste, and
found Mary, and Joseph, and the
babe lying in a manger. And when
they had seen it, they made known
abroad the saying which was told
them concerning this child. And
all they that heard it wondered at
those things which were told them
by the shepherds (Luke 2:16–18).
I’m sure the shepherds woke up
many friends and loved ones that
night as they cried, “Come and see the
star and hurry to the stable! We were
just there, and we have seen that our
Savior has been born. Go and see for
yourself!”
The night of Christ’s
birth, shepherds were
busy watching their flocks
when suddenly, they were
covered with God’s glory. And
there were in the same country
shepherds abiding in the field,
keeping watch over their flock by
night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord
came upon them, and the glory of
the Lord shone round about them:
and they were sore afraid (Luke
2:8,9). That was a bit of Heaven.
And the angel said unto them,
Fear not: for, behold, I bring you
good tidings of great joy, which
shall be to all people (Luke 2:10).
The angel of the Lord was bringing a
bit of good news from Heaven to those
shepherds as he said, For unto you is
born this day in the city of David a
Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you;
Ye shall find the babe wrapped
in swaddling clothes, lying in a
manger. And suddenly there was
with the angel a multitude of the
heavenly host praising God, and
saying, Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace, good will
toward men (Luke 2:11–14). I’m
sure there were no other babies that
night who were born in a stable and
laid in a manger. God always confirms
everything He says.
