@ Shaker Library
Jonathon Howard Keller is an Adult
Services Librarian who began work at
the Library in June 2019. In addition
to helping readers find what they
need, Keller especially enjoys helping
newcomers from abroad. He serves as
a liaison with the English Language
Learners program, has created and
maintains a newcomer Welcome Center,
hosts the
English
Conversation
Club, and
works with
the City’s
Human
Relations
Task Force
and the
emerging
Shaker Ambassadors program. His own
travels abroad have enhanced his natural
ability and ease in making people
feel welcome.
“I was raised in Kent, Ohio, and
grew up surrounded by books and
reading,” says Keller. His father was
curator of Special Collections at the
Kent State University Libraries. Keller
graduated from KSU with degrees in
History, English, and Religion Studies,
and earned a master’s in Teaching
English as a Second Language. He has
a master’s in Library and Information
Science from KSU as well.
Keller worked for Borders bookstore
for 13 years, taught ESL and academic
writing at KSU and elsewhere, and,
before coming to Shaker Library, worked
at Reed Memorial Library in Ravenna.
“Librarianship keeps me learning about
many different things and allows me
to serve people without selling them
something,” says Keller with a wry smile.
He finds that teaching of any kind
is a two-way street, and that he always
learns something new from his students.
One of his hobbies is role-playing games,
like Dungeons & Dragons. He has used
this in his work since discovering that
students learning English often feel less
self-conscious of their language skills in a
gaming environment.
