Community Engagement Specialist
Ali Black plays billiards. She picked
up the game from her in-laws and
finds that “it requires focus and
concentration. It allows me to
turn off the outside world and pay
attention to what is in front of me.”
Adult Services Librarian Matt
Grabski has enjoyed playing guitar
for over 25 years. “Even though
I’ve never gotten above ‘barely
intermediate’ as a player, I still
enjoy making some joyful noise,”
he says. “Also, it’s something I can
share with my daughter, who’s still
young enough to believe that her
father knows what he’s doing.”
Youth Services Associate Kristen Chilson and Adult Services Librarian
Jonathon Keller enjoy playing Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), a role-playing
video game driven by players’ imagination in the fantasy world of sword and
sorcery. “I’ve always been interested in writing, world-building, and playing
board games with friends, so D&D was an easy fit for me,” says Kristen. “A friend
introduced it to me and invited me to their group. I’ve been passionate about
it ever since.” Jonathon has been playing for over 40 years and says he loves
interacting with people in a make-believe world. And he has developed scholarly
interests and other hobbies as spin-offs of this interest. SL
Playful
The
Side
Look to the Library for material
and programs that encourage
playfulness, and enhance hobbies.
Adult Services Manager Cindy
Maxey says, “We’re looking
forward to reopening our meeting
rooms at the end of the year so
we can resume a variety of fun
programs like Game Nights, Movie
Saturdays, and Cook the Book,
as well as offer other creative
opportunities for our community.”
And they’re not playing around
about that.
