Cooking is a popular hobby with
Library staff. Jim Bagwell,
Circulation Manager and moderator
of the monthly Cook the Book
program, earned his cooking chops
from his uncles. What he really
loves is “the deliciousness of it all. I
enjoy seeing my friends and family
enjoy the meal. Not just the food,
but the company.”
Playful
The
Side
When Adult Services Librarian
Rachel Wilhoyte isn’t selecting
novels for the Library’s collection or
recommending titles to customers,
she enjoys playing video games.
As one of the organizers of Game
Nights, she shares her gaming
expertise with others. Rachel enjoys
the storytelling aspect of some of
the games, which is not surprising
for a Fiction Librarian.
Circulation Assistant MeShelle
Barclay runs a popular craft circle
in her neighborhood. One of her
favorite activities is doodling, which
began when her dad taught her to
write. “He used a Sheaffer fountain
pen filled with jet black ink. He
gave me one filled with peacock
blue ink, and we practiced on onion
skin paper. Dad had gorgeous
penmanship. I’ve had a fondness for
specialty papers, lovely pens, and
mark-making ever since. The heft
of my pen and the way the paper
accepts the ink gives me joy.”
Fiction Librarian Pam Tidwell
enjoys baking and making candy
– and her co-workers enjoy her
baking as well.
Youth Services Librarian Annelise
Hoftmeyer enjoys collecting,
repairing, and creating clothes.
“On one hand, there are the
satisfactions of self-sufficiency,
of turning one’s limitations into
something useful and expressive,
and even lovely,” Annelise says.
“On the other, I like the slow
process of honing a manual skill. I
like making things perfectly suited
to their task, even if that task is to
be a T-shirt—but the best T-shirt
for a certain person, time, place, or
occasion. I’m preoccupied with how
meaning is imminent in everyday
materiality, and perhaps one of the
most portable, personal ways we
continually communicate that is
through our clothes.”
