Sometimes it’s a previous career
reimagined as an avocation that
brings delight. Youth Services
Manager Shannon Titas worked
in dance for more than 15 years
before becoming a librarian. Today
she continues to find intellectual
challenge and artistic expression
in performing modern dance and
ballet. “When the music and the
movement carry me away, there’s
no other feeling like it.”
Adult Services Librarian Stacie
Anderson enjoys cross-stitch in her
spare time. She says she is drawn to
the challenge of picking out a detail
from a painting and converting it to
cross-stitch. Her creative pursuits
become much-appreciated gifts.
Youth Services Librarian Megan
Brinker enjoys bicycling. “I love
the feeling of freedom cycling
gives me – the wind in my face, the
ability to go places a car can’t take
me. The world looks much different
on a bicycle than it does blurring by
in a car.”
Some staff enjoy hobbies that take
them outdoors. Adult Services
Associate Virginia Schoelch loves
beachcombing. Virginia looks for
treasures and has quite a collection
of beach glass. “Each time I go to
the beach, I feel like I’ve been on a
mini-vacation,” she says.
In the words of Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw,
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old;
we grow old because we stop playing.”
While play is crucial for a
child’s development, it is
also beneficial for adults.
And Library employees
know a little something
about play and having fun.
