the creation of a character that he hopes revives
comic book culture in Marietta.
Behold: CobbZilla!
Marietta’s Justin Simmonds came up with the
concept last fall, after one of his ideas around the
storming of Area 51 went flat when the event
didn’t happen.
“I needed to think of something people
would buy, that they would be interested that
wasn’t tied to something fleeting in culture,” he
said. “I’m always in my head, I constantly have
stories and ideas swirling around and most of my
ideas come to me when I’m doing nothing, like
walking or washing dishes. So one day I was
actually washing my dishes and I started thinking
about how the Big Chicken is a landmark that
people know of, and it’s huge! It’s almost like our
own Godzilla, and I was surprised no one had
thought of it before.”
The next day, Simmonds was going to be
selling some of his other posters and artwork at
the Marietta Square Art Walk, but he couldn’t
shake the idea that came to him and, as many
artists do, worked into the wee hours of the night
to create his CobbZilla creature.
“I was up until about 3 a.m. to create this
CobbZilla poster and was able to get about 25
posters printed, and I sold everything just in the
first hour or two. They were all gone. So that’s
when I knew I had something,” he said.
Simmonds was born in Queens, N.Y. and
lived there until he was eight years old. That year,
his mother was supposed to meet a friend at the
plaza of the World Trade Center for a birthday
lunch, but had to cancel due to a doctor’s appointment.
That day was Sept. 11.
